Gerald Gustave Bilodeau died on February 15, 2026 at his Newton residence. He was 96.
Gerald was married to his loving wife Madelyn for 69 years until her passing in October 2025. Gerald is survived by his six children; Gerald E. and his wife Sharon, Thomas and his wife Karen, Francis, Matthew, Mark and his wife Kate, and Anne (Bilodeau) Pickett and her husband John; and his grandchildren, Rebecca, Gerry, Tommy, Brian, Tim, Jake, Teddy, Jack, and Madelyn.
He was the son of the late Pierre J. Bilodeau and Mabel M. (LaCombe) Bilodeau, and was preceded in death by his brother Roland E. Bilodeau.
He was born on November 2nd 1929 in Waterville, ME into a French speaking home. He graduated with honors from the University of Maine in 1950 with a degree in mathematics. He was then accepted into the mathematics graduate program at Harvard University where he completed his PhD in 1959.
In 1955 he joined Westinghouse Atomic Power, whose Bettis Laboratories in Pittsburgh built nuclear reactors for the Navy. After four years, he returned to Boston to join Sylvania Electronic Systems and a year later, in 1960, he moved onto his true calling to become a professor at Boston College. He taught there for 40 years.
He was a dedicated academic mathematician and a passionate teacher, exuding his love for the material and his joy in sharing that love with others. He was recognized as one of the most highly respected teachers at BC, earning the very selective Phi Beta Kappa teaching award in 1992.
In his long and devoted marriage, he was a loving partner to Madelyn and was caring and sensitive towards her blindness and hearing loss. To his children he was a presence in coaching baseball and soccer, and he loved summers in Plymouth or Cape Cod, where he took everyone fishing and engaged in spirited games of hearts.
He was devoted to the Catholic faith and was a staunch advocate for Christian values. He attended mass regularly at Our Lady Help of Christians Church and served as a lector and CCD teacher. He set an example as a deeply principled, humble, and caring person.
Visiting hours will take place Thursday, February 19 from 4-7 PM. The funeral mass will be held at Our Lady Help of Christians Church, Newtonville at Noon on Friday, February 20. Interment will follow in St. Mary’s Cemetery, Needham.
